Frequently asked questions
Are the sparks real?
Yes. There is nothing electronic in it. Flint scraped across rough asphalt throws real sparks, the same way a lighter flint does, and they show up brightest after dark. If yours does not spark, the guarantee below covers it.
Will it stay on?
Stretched over the front of the boot with the band pressed down, it grips. Check it before you ride, the same as you would a helmet strap, and re-seat it if it feels loose. Put it on when you are about to ride rather than walking around in it, since every step on concrete wears the flints.
Will it fit my boots?
It fits most boots and sneakers. The strap stretches over the front of the shoe and the plate sits under the toe. What matters is that the plate can sit flat, so very narrow toes or heavily lugged soles may not work as well.
Do I need one or two?
One kit fits one boot. Get two if you want sparks off both feet, or one for a riding buddy. With 2 kits the second is half price, and with 3 kits the third is free: $16.66 a kit. The saving is already in the price.
What happens when the flints wear out?
You swap them. Each kit has four, two fitted and two spare, so a 2-kit bundle is eight flints. They sit under metal clips on the plate: lift the clips, slide a new flint in, press them back down. How long a flint lasts depends on the road and how hard you press, so we will not invent a number.
Is it safe?
It is as safe as where and how you use it. The sparks are hot enough to start a fire, so never use it near fuel, at a gas station, on dry grass or anywhere with a fire ban. Keep it for clear roads with nobody behind you, keep your speed down and your foot level, and wear proper boots and a helmet. It is not for use in traffic.
Is it legal on public roads?
That depends on where you ride. Rules differ by state and country, and some places do not allow anything that throws sparks on a public road, so check locally. Private land and organised events, with permission, are the safe bet.
What if it does not work for me?
That is what the spark guarantee is for. If it does not throw sparks on rough, dry asphalt, email us within 30 days and we refund you, whether or not you have used it.
Is it a good gift for a rider?
It is one of the few rider gifts with no size to get wrong: the strap stretches to fit most boots. Two kits means they can spark both feet, or share with a riding buddy.
Will it mark my shoes?
The flints take the contact with the road, not your sole. The sparks are hot, though, so light-coloured sneakers can pick up the odd scorch mark. Leather boots handle it best.
Does it work on a bicycle, scooter or skateboard?
Yes, anywhere you can drag a foot flat on rough asphalt. On a skateboard it doubles as a foot brake that throws sparks.
How long does shipping take?
Free tracked shipping to the US, delivered in 7–17 business days. The buy box shows the expected dates for an order placed today.
Are the photos and videos real?
Yes. The product photos (what is in the box, the size, the fit and the close-ups) are the real kit, and the riding photos and videos are our supplier’s footage of it in use. Real sparks depend on the road: rough, dry asphalt throws the most, smooth concrete far less. If yours does not spark, the guarantee covers it.
Does it work in the rain?
Dry roads work best. Wet asphalt cuts the trail and your grip, so save it for dry nights.
